Susie- Thanks for your comments! M.E. Kerr has said that even though she didn't enjoy reading historical books when she was younger, when she was an adult, she wanted to write about WWII because it was such an important and eventful time in her life.

ESL student assignment
Monday, 19-Apr-99 21:37:43
Hi! I posted an earlier message thinking this was a general chat board, but now, I think otherwise. I would like my (adult) students to come and do something interactive with this website, allowing them to send a message and perhaps get a response. What do you suggest, and please be specific because I'm just getting into such assignments. Thank you!!!

My students are now reading I Stay Near You. I asked them whether they would like to be a friend of Mildred's or not (during her high school days). What do you think?

By the way, I think that you posed a very interesting question to your students about whether or not they would be friends with Mildred. M.E. Kerr often writes about "outsiders" and tolerance of differences. I'm sure as ESL students, members of your class might be able to draw from personal experience what it's like to be perceived as different from "mainstream" culture. Or they might be able to think back on their adolescence and recall different cliques they and their friends had in school and in the neighborhood.

I couldn't locate Is That You, Miss Blue at this site but someone else had mentioned that it was difficult to locate The Son of Someone Famous. Advanced Book Exchange has a listing for this one for anyone interested for $10.

I thought of another resource: Kim Pauley, the YA literature guide, at
miningco.com might have other suggestions for you. If you go to this site, you will see you can submit your question to her via email or message board and she will "mine" the web for a response to your query.

K-12 graders with questions about a school assignment
Friday, 19-Mar-99 15:54:39
Are you a K-12th grader working on an assignment with questions about where to go next? The ALA has a service called KidsConnect. You fill out a form with your topic and questions, and a volunteer librarian will get back to you in 2 school days with suggestions. Here is the link: KidsConnect (www.ala.org/ICONN/AskKC.html). Maybe this service will be of assistance to some of you.

I'm not sure what your request is. Are you saying that your library (school or public) does not carry any books by M.E. Kerr or Mary James? If you are looking for samples of her writing, I think your best bet is the library. You might also find quotes from books in different review sites. Try this site: M.E. Kerr's publisher: HarperCollins or Mary James' publisher: Scholastic

Thanks for your feedback. I'm not sure what you're referring to exactly, but I'll take a look. I will note here that most of the comments I've written are stream-of-consciousness so those would not pass the Elements of Style test. But at any rate, thanks for writing.

Shoebag
Thursday, 01-Oct-98 12:20:19
Hi! I am a fourth grade teacher in Council Grove, KS I just finished reading my first Mary James book--Shoebag. It was great. I am real excited about using it with my class for our next class book read aloud. I am looking for ideas to use with this book. One that I thought of was to write a responsive journal from Shoebag's point of view after each chapter. I could use some art ideas or other reading/language activities too. I think we might do mini-reports on insects or arachinds to bring in some science. If you have any other neat ideas let me know. thanks!

I think the themes of tolerance and co-existing lend themselves to discussion. An art idea might be to design the fantasy vacation for Shoebag's family and the family they live with - i.e., hiding spots, food resources. Also, I love doing origami projects. The only insect I can think of is a cicada. You can probably find the instructions in an origami book at the library. But if you're interested, I'd gladly try to send them to you.
