school visit
Wednesday, 05-Jul-00 09:59:58
I noticed on the A-Z page that V was for school visits, which she loves.

I am interested in obtaining information about a school visit from "Mary James". The 4th grade classes at my school will be reading SHOEBAG in the Fall, and all previous classes have LOVED the book!

Shockproof Sydney Skate movie
Thursday, 22-Jun-00 10:06:53
This story is in the news today:

"Writer-director Cameron Crowe (''Jerry Maguire'') is in early negotiations to develop and helm ''Shockproof Sydney Skate,'' based on the novel by Marijane Meaker, for Fox 2000."

The rest of the article is
    here or http://my.aol.com/entertainment/story.tmpl?table=n&cat=03&id=0006220607722019.

I love Cameron Crowe (he wrote and directed "Fast Times at Ridgemont High"). I think he would be a great choice.

        It's also here or http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20000622/re/film_crowe_dc_1.html.

        And here is the text:

Thursday June 22 6:06 AM ET

        'Skate' Key for Crowe

        By Charles Lyons

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Writer-director Cameron Crowe (''Jerry Maguire'') is in early negotiations to develop and helm ''Shockproof Sydney Skate,'' based on the novel by Marijane Meaker, for Fox 2000.
Told from the point of view of a 17-year old boy, ''Shockproof'' is a coming-of-age story about a young man who, between boarding school and college, falls in love with a female model with whom his mother, an ad exec, is also in love.
Scribe Steve Kloves (who is adapting ``Harry Potter'' for Warner Bros.) has already penned several drafts of ''Shockproof'' and will be rewriting under Crowe's supervision.
The project has been in development at Fox for several years, and its producer, Teri Schwartz, has held options to the book dating
        back to 1977.
At present, Crowe is completing work on an untitled rock 'n' roll project due out in the fall via DreamWorks. The picture stars Kate Hudson, Frances McDormand, Billy Crudup and Jason Lee.

I just wanted to say that I saw the trailer for "Almost Famous" Cameron Crowe's autobiographical movie (he started writing for Rolling Stone when he was 15), and it looked AMAZING! I can't wait to see it in the fall!

I'd have to look it up to be sure, but I think it's Tosca by Puccini. You can look at the libretto and more at this site: Tosca Online.

This website has a study guide created to supplement to reading of The Diary of Anne Frank but could also be used in tandem with Gentlehands:Holocaust Study Guide
(http://www.gi.esu10.k12.ne.us/SDGI/Westridge/holo.html%7F). And the message below talks about this link: Internet Assignment for Gentlehands
      (http://camalott.com/~aea/pair1.htm).

      Michelle

update: The first link is inactive (Holocaust Study Guide). But the idea is still usable. Try adapting a WWII Holocaust curriculum to use with Gentlehands.

Gentlehands Trial
Monday, 20-Mar-00 11:57:03

At the moment, I can't place who Dr. Verner is, but in general, I would try to ask questions about what he knows about Gentlehands. For example, does he know him? If yes, from where and when? Does he know anything about the allegations? How? Did he witness any of the alleged activities? Does he have any evidence to support one side or the other? Oh, and you might want to first build up his credibility as a witness. For example, what is his background and why should you or the jury care what he has to say? Hope this is helpful.

ANYONE WHO'S READ GENTLEHANDS, LOOK HERE!
Friday, 17-Mar-00 19:29:22
I had to read "Gentlehands" for a class assignment and the only thing I really remember about it was that great Sara Teasdale poem, about beauty or something. I don't really like poetry but I did LOVE that poem. If anyone's got a copy of the book, PLEASE do me a favor and e-mail me the poem, OK?

    Sincerely,
Fluffy, punk-rock chick and wild teenager :)

      Barter

      Life has loveliness to sell,
      All beautiful and splendid things,
Blue waves whitened on a cliff,
Soaring fire that sways and sings,
      And children's faces looking up,
      Holding wonder like a cup.

      Life has loveliness to sell,
Music like a curve of gold,
Scent of pine trees in the rain,
Eyes that love you, arms that hold,
And for your spirit's still delight,
Holy thoughts that star the night.

Spend all you have for loveliness,
      Buy it and never count the cost;
For one white singing hour of peace
Count many a year of strife well lost,
And for a breath of ecstacy
Give all you have been, or could be.

      Sara Teasdale

Background info about Gentlehands
Wednesday, 01-Mar-00 18:21:41
Many of you have been asking about the inspiration for Gentlehands. Here is an explanation written by M.E. Kerr for all of you interested readers:

Gentlehands was inspired by a romance going on next door to me, in East
Hampton, N.Y. My young neighbor was dating for the first time, one of our
summer girls who visits us only in the warm months. He was a townie. To
give you an idea of the difference between them: he'd just received a new
ten speed bike for his birthday. She'd received a Porsche for her
graduation. While I was watching these two fall in love, I was reading
    Holocaust history.
I was reading about a very cruel SS officer....The two things ultimately
became Gentlehands....Thanks for your interest. Best wishes, M.E. Kerr.

I`m Peggy Graney`s brother. Congratulations for being selected as one of Auburn`s outstanding citizens of the past 100 years. Your many accomplishments make for a well deserved honor. After reading the article,I thought about your brother Junior. I recall playing football with him at the empty lot on the corner of Alden & Highland. Along with Phil Rindge & Gale Benn, he was one of my boyhood heroes. I would appreciate if you could let me know what happened to him. Some years ago my first wife passed away & two years ago this month Joan Crawford Ringwood[Don "Peaches" Crawford`s sister] & I were married. Her daughter lives in your old home on Alden Avenue.

What is the book about? Whatever your response is, it will contain themes from the book. As for the climax of the book, who are the main characters and what are their stories? What happens to them and when do these things happen? Hope this is helpful.

Yeah, I think you're right, Michelle. However, the climax for the whole book, I would think, would be when the stories are reaching the highest point of emotional tension. But I'm not a teacher, and its just my opinion!
